Nelia Eva “Sally” Riley, 89, of Carmi, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Wabash Christian Village in Carmi. She was born July 6, 1930, in Rising Sun, Illinois, the daughter of John and Julia (Huff) James. She was married to John F. Riley, and he preceded her in death in 1966.
Sally was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carmi for many years, and later a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Crossville, Illinois. She was a Gold Star Wife, having lost her husband while he was on active duty in the Unites States Military. While living in Ft. Benning, Georgia, she served as a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Among her pastimes were cooking, sewing, quilting, enjoying her grandchildren, and providing “taxi” service for others.
Survivors include sons Scott (Cathy) Riley of Jasper, Georgia, Tim (Renae) Riley of Crossville; daughter Sally Ann Riley of Carmi; brother Floyd (Jean) James of Little Rock, Arkansas; sister Eliza V. Hart of Evansville, Indiana;
Grandchildren John (Yna) Riley, Lisa Riley, Dexter Riley, Melisa (Mike) Moore, Drew (Hannah) Riley, Zachary Schnieder, Katie (Jerry) Dover/Jones, Josh (Erin) Bail, Thaddeus (Sarah) Shipley; and 21 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters infant Barbara James, Kathryn Bush, Vera Pyle; brothers infant Billy Don James, John James, Jesse James.
Visitation and funeral are Monday, July 6, 2020, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Visitation is 5-6 pm followed by funeral service at 6 pm. Burial will be at a later date in Big Prairie Cemetery in Carmi.
Memorials may be made to Wabash Christian Village Memory Care Unit, 216 College Boulevard, Carmi, Illinois 62821, and will also be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi.
