Harry Alan Saxe (97)

Formerly of Carmi, Illinois
Birth: October 14, 1926
Death: June 24, 2024

Harry Alan Saxe passed peacefully away on Monday, June 24, 2024. He was born October 14, 1926 in Edwards County, IL to Frederick Frank and Louella Mae (Coad) Saxe. He was married to Mary Lou (McVaigh) Saxe who preceded him in death on August 19, 2010.

After completing high school, Harry joined the United States Navy on Jan 16, 1945, and served until July 1946. He then re-enlisted in August of 1947 until he was discharged in April of 1950. He became a Radioman lll Class in his first two years of service and was stationed on a PC1143 making trips to Guam and other Pacific islands. During his second tour, he was stationed in the Pacific on the USS Merapi. He received a Victory medal, an American Area ribbon, and an Asiatic-Pacific ribbon. He loved the sea and travelling to see countries he had only read about. After his military service, he married Mary Lou McVaigh on May 5, 1950. They purchased land in White County and started farming.

Harry was a self-made man. He had learned the trades such as electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, mechanics, woodworking as a young man. As a result, one carpenter, Mary Lou, and Harry built their first Bedford stone home. What Harry couldn’t do, Mary Lou could, so they made a great team. In 1970, he decided to make a career change and went to work as an insurance agent for Country Companies. He excelled in that profession because he genuinely liked to help provide his clients with a product he believed would help them.

Harry and Mary Lou were members of the First Christian Church of Carmi, IL. They led lives that reflected their faith in Jesus Christ for many years. The majority of their free time was spent in church service, church activities, and with church friends.

Harry is survived by his daughter Peggy (Randy) Fulkerson of Knoxville, TN; brother Roger Saxe of Mt Vernon, WA; five grandchildren, Gene (Beth)Sexton of Costa Rica, Mathew (Pam) Taylor of West Farmington, OH, Kristen (Shawn) Freeman of Mesa, AZ, Dustin (Rebeca) Fulkerson of Kokomo, IN, and Darrin Fulkerson of Knoxville, TN; eight great grandchildren, Shawn, Aiden, and Evyn Freeman, Rebe, Olivia, and Apphia Fulkerson, Madison and Jacob Taylor; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding Harry in death are his parents; his wife, Mary Lou; his daughter, Brenda Saxe; his son, Boyd Saxe; both of his sisters, Helen Pauline Beck and Margaret Ray.

  2. I’ll try again today. Sorry to hear of Harry’s passing. Remembering the long talks we had with Harry and Mary Lou much about the Saxe and McVaigh families and their happenings. Lot to cover, Ha. They had the scoop. Such is bygone days and pleasant memories. You have our sympathy.
